If the box has $800 worth of gold in the hinges and lock then yes it is an ok deal.

Youre better off buying a UHR. Buy it while you can...you wont regret it plus youll get a very nice mahogany box to go with it along with a coin 100 years in the making

If you're going to spend that kind of money for a GAE, the UHR has a lot more upside potential to it, as does a nice MS64 or MS65 slabbed pre-33 St. Gaudens that can be had for about the same price.

The "first day of issue" slabs are bull shti, imo. It is simply a marketing ploy so they can charge you $1800 for a simple 1 oz gold bullion coin. Don't do it! For maybe a little more you can get 2 oz of gold. All modern bullion is in Mint State condition; they don't circulate!

Also, see this link on slabbing bullion: http://goldismoney.info/forums/showthread.php?t=343319

hey guys thanks for your "inputs"! I have not bought it yet. Curmudgeonista, maybe you are right. A UHR coin might be better...

I wouldnt touch it with a 10 foot pole. If you want gold, get yourself 1.5 ounces of AGE's instead of 1 ounce for that kind of money.

I would not buy it. I think you would be better off just buying an unslabbed GAE and the rest in Ag. My.02

I agree. Funny answer - kinda to the point - however.

Buying bullion coins with recent dates slabbed only works for a UHR Eagle or a great coin for tomorrow. The MINT has made 7 TIMES :signs14: the 2009 GOLD coins they did in 2007 - so there a whole hellofa lot of competition out there.

400% more than even LAST year! :36_3_12:

Hope that helps,

PS a couple more bucks will buy two one-ounce bullion coins - IMHO.
